Mr T Croydon : Voted Maroondah’s Best Burger Joint
Dean Travers – Mr T Burgers & Fried Chicken
He studied geology and was dumped from his old oil rigging job – but now Dean Travers is having the last laugh whipping up the best burgers in town.
Mr Travers – a self-confessed burger, fried chicken and craft beer lover – moved to Croydon after losing his job as an off shore oil rigger, and planned to start a food truck selling his favourite snacks.
He then spotted an empty shop space on Hewish Rd and opened Mr T Burgers and Fried Chicken in December 2019.
“When I got made redundant and the price of oil dropped, I went back to what I know which is cooking,” he said.
Mr Travers weathered the coronavirus outbreak in 2020 and his restaurant become one of the most popular takeaway offerings in Croydon’s Main St precinct.
And Leader readers clearly still love what he’s dishing up, with the store winning our poll to find the best burger joint in Maroondah.
Mr Travers said he was proud to have won the honour over the likes of Ringwood East’s Bedford Coffee Co, Heathmont’s Embers Grill and Burger and Eastland’s Stanley Burgers.
“For me it just confirms that I think I have some of the best burgers in Melbourne, so it says a lot,” he said.
“We grind our own meat for our patties, make everything in store, and give that extra bit of love.”
Mr Travers said his most popular items included his Beef and Bacon burger, the Nashville chicken burger with smoked garlic mayo, and the Mac Daddy which included a mac and cheese croquette.
He felt Croydon had great potential to become a dining hub, and urged people to continue to support local businesses particularly in Melbourne’s latest coronavirus lockdown.
“I’m really happy we won and hopefully we can get back to a bit of normality and see my restaurant full again, like all the others around Melbourne,” he said.
“People need to get out and support local, because it doesn’t matter who it is, everyone’s suffering at the end of the day.”
